Opinion: The Supreme Court Is More Powerful Than A Sitting President

Everyone thinks that the President of the United States is the most powerful job in the world. But do you ever stop and think about all of the things a president can’t do? While a sitting President of the United States has the authority to launch nuclear weapons, meet with diplomats from all over the world, and sign legislation into law, there is often an even greater responsibility by the United States Supreme Court. Being appointed and confirmed to the bench of the highest court in the land is nothing to brush over. It is one of the most important positions in our nation today in the judicial branch of government.

As the 83-year-old Supreme Court Justice, Stephen Breyer announced his retirement, President Biden will undoubtedly be making history by nominating the first Black woman to ever serve on the United States Supreme Court. Out of the 115 justices that have ever served on the nation’s highest court, there have been one hundred-eight white men, two Black men, four white women, and one Latina. Biden stated to the press that he will select the nominee by the end of February. Of those on the shortlist, the president will also make a very big decision on who he believes will be best suited to take over in Breyers place.
